Call for action at G20 Riyadh International Standards Summit
Dear friends and colleagues,
Having listened to the panel speakers and discussions, I am reminded of how this event is a great example of the global standards and conformity assessment communities working together to overcome the current health crisis and help prepare for future crisis in whatever form they may take.
The nature of the pandemic has highlighted the importance for international cooperation. It is now more important than ever, as globalization has become a reality. Each standards development organization brings its unique expertise to the table and the results that come from pooling our strengths are positive. This year together with ISO, we identified standards that support the global fight against COVID-19 and made them freely available, for the benefit of many people around the world.
The pandemic has also accelerated digital transformation in many sectors. It’s thanks to diverse technologies that safe, reliable services could continue to be delivered, such as education and healthcare, while global economies were kept going by millions of people who worked remotely and maintained social distancing.
IEC Standards and conformity assessment underpin these technologies. They facilitate international trade and reassure all stakeholders, from governments and retailers to consumers, that products and services are safe, efficient and reliable.
They also help the world to address major challenges, beyond the current crisis, that are reflected in the sustainable development goals. These range from increasing access to affordable, sustainable and clean energy, to making cities safer and infrastructure more resilient.
For these reasons, I would like to strongly reinforce the call to action today by IEC, ISO, and ITU, with the support of the World Standards Cooperation, that all countries recognize, support, and adopt international standards to accelerate digital transformation in all sectors of the economy to help overcome global crises, such as COVID-19, and contribute towards the achievement of the sustainable development goals to build a community with a shared future for all mankind.
